This module focuses on developing options for young people who are ready to move-on into longer term or permanent accommodation in social or private rented housing. It identifies some of the creative approaches developed by local authorities and their partners to enable young people to access the local housing markets when they are ready to live independently.
For many young people moving-on from temporary supported accommodation means moving to rented accommodation though for some moving-on may mean moving into university accommodation or back with family.
Research for Homeless Link found that, in 2004, 45 per cent of all hostel bed spaces in England and Wales were occupied by people waiting to move on. Young people (especially those under 18) face some real barriers to accessing move on accommodation. These may be legal, issues of perception, related to the benefits system, or related to a shortage of affordable or acceptable housing.
Move on accommodation solutions are needed to maintain a flow through local emergency or short term options for homeless young people. In this way, it is the key to maintaining a full range of accommodation options for young people.
