Thames Gateway and the Olympics

Case study: Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House is relocating its set production facility to the High House site in Purfleet. With it comes a huge boost for the local community and an opportunity to expand the creative industries in Thurrock.

With this in mind, a partnership has been formed with Royal Opera House, Thurrock Council, Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Arts Council East and East of England Development Agency. Proposals are being developed to extend the facilities at High House to include a National Skills Academy specialising in technical theatre and vocational excellence.

This Academy would provide state-of-the-art training from professional working in the industry. It would have close links with the vocational and academic facilities in Grays and could also include:

  • a set and costume archive with guided tours of this and other facilities
  • school participation and other educational programmes
  • other creative industry organisations
  • a new cafe and restaurant facility

It is anticipated that the academy complex could be completed by 2009 offering opportunities to local, regional and country-wide trainees as well as a a resource for local communities, national and international visitors.
