A selection of images representing communities.
Purfleet has a number of key employment and residential sites that together present an opportunity to create a model mixed community, with good public access to the riverside.
One of the sites to be developed first, Botany Way, will be a mixed use development comprising of:
Infrastructure improvements are also being made to the pathways network to encourage more cycling and walking. This will create links between shops, schools, community centres and health facilities within a five minute walk of the majority of existing residential areas making them readily accessible to all.
Congestion on the roads around Thurrock has already been relieved by the new roundabout at Stonehouse Corner. Also a new link road between the Purfleet bypass and London Road will open up 20 hectares of industrial and employment land. Together, capacity will be created for over 1,000 new jobs and some 2,200 new homes in the Purfleet area.
Purfleet is also home to some significant environmental assets, principally the Mardyke Valley and the RSPB Nature Reserve at Rainham Marshes. The completed RSPB Environment and Education centre was opened by the Secretary of State on 13 November 2006. It is now the largest remaining expanse of wetland bordering the upper reaches of the Thames Estuary. In addition to the visitor centre the reserve boasts over 3.5 miles of boardwalks as well as a number of educational Discovery Zones.
