Thames Gateway and the Olympics

Case study: Thurrock Ports and Logistics

Ports are one of the major economic drivers in the Thames Gateway and South Essex is strongly represented in this sector.

An aerial view of the Port of TilburyThe Port of Tilbury is one of the key entry ports to the UK, serving the short haul trade from Europe and Scandinavia and it is possible that the Port's role will be further strengthened by future expansions. Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation will be looking at the wider Tilbury area in the near future when they commission a masterplan, it is expected to include the expansion of the Tilbury Port.

In addition, the regions ports and logistics capacity could be significantly enhanced, if Dubai World Ports are given the go ahead to develop a major new deep water port at Shellhaven. The proposed development which, if granted consent, will be of national importance to the future of the UK port and logistics industry. It could eventually create up to 16,500 jobs in the port and on the 100,000 sq m business park and logistics centre.
