The Craylands Estate and Fryerns School site are situated less than two miles from Basildon town centre. Despite this the estate is isolated from the rest of the town and is home to some of the most deprived communities in Basildon and the Thames Gateway.
English Partnerships are leading the £250m Craylands and Fryerns estate renewal project which will see the comprehensive renewal of the Craylands estate and the development for housing of the adjacent Fryerns school site.
Over 2,000 people live on the estate and there are 957 dwellings in four storey maisonette blocks and terraced housing. Through the regeneration it is proposed that 344 existing dwellings remain, 613 dwellings be re-provided with an additional 695 new dwellings be constructed. The total number of dwellings on both sites will be 1652.
Other elements include improvements to the accessibility of the estate, in the public realm and the re-provision of a local centre where Essex County Council are to locate some social services, alongside health facilities.
English Partnerships are leading this project and are working in partnership with Basildon District Council, Essex County Council, and the South West Essex Primary Care Trust, Housing Corporation. The Registered Social Landlord is Swan Housing and they are developing the estate with Lovells.
Outline planning permission for the whole scheme has been granted and a detailed application for Phase was submitted and heard by committee in March 2007. It is anticipated that the first phase of construction work will start in May 2007.
