Case study: Basildon town centre
Over £1m of Communities and Local Government Thames Gateway Programme funding has been used to support the
redevelopment of Basildon town centre. This has resulted in creation of major plans for the comprehensive redevelopment of the town centre. Now valued at over £900m, the procurement process to find a development partner is well underway.
The town centre development framework sets an ambitious programme for change, identifying net capacity for 3650 new homes, 49,000 sqm of additional retail and leisure floor space and 55,000 sq m of commercial space. In addition, there are plans to relocate the civic centre and library-theatre complex.
Five key areas have been identified for development:
- Redevelopment of the Southside area will bridge the gap between the town centre, the station hub and the sought after residential area of Kingswood.
- The Station quarter will be a high-quality interchange with a new focus provided by station square, key to this development will be a new station concourse linked to the Southside and a new bus hub zone.
- The Eastside area will be the focus for significant new retail development with the potential for new office development in the longer term.
- Broadmayne currently a four lane dual carriageway, will be redesigned to create a new urban boulevard, lined with high-quality buildings.
- The vision for Westgate is to create a lively mixed use area bringing the 101 hectare Gloucester Park in to the heart of the town centre and will be the focus of significant residential development and recreational opportunities including the proposed Sporting Village.
