Thames Gateway and the Olympics

Case study: Lewisham town centre

Lewisham town centre is the borough's main retail area and an important transport hub with mainline rail, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and bus interchanges.

Lewisham Council is preparing an area action plan for the town centre focused on the realisation of the Lewisham Gateway scheme. The scheme will provide 1,000 new homes, new shopping and environmental improvements.
Key to the Lewisham Gateway Development is the removal of the existing roundabout to make better use of the land, which is currently surrounded by traffic. A green oasis in the making in Lewisham TC - Cornmill Gardens

By rearranging the road junction near to the railway line, the opportunity is being created for new developments. It will create a well-designed transport interchange, new housing and new jobs and strengthen links with the existing town centre.

Further investment in the High Street is planned. This centres on the extension and refurbishment of the Riverdale shopping centre and renewal of the public areas.

In due course, the redevelopment of sites at Lewis Grove Island and Engate Street may take place. Other areas, each with planning consent for over 200 homes, include the Thurston Road and Venson sites.
