The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) works with Communities and Local Government, the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC), English Partnerships, London Development Agency (LDA), and Transport for London (TfL). The Council is working to create a well-educated, highly-skilled population who choose to live, work and invest in the Borough.
Barking Riverside was also identified as one of the Thames Gateway's strategic development locations in March 2005. A joint venture between English Partnerships and Bellway has been legally established and the planning application for the site was recently approved by Barking and Dagenham subject to the view of the Mayor. The capacity of the site will be determined by the adequacy of public transport access, specifically the DLR extension to Barking Riverside, East London transit and a new station on the C2C line. The maximum capacity is around 11,000 homes.
Additionally, Barking town centre was identified as a centre of urban renewal at the same time and is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at revitalising it as the major centre for the Borough and for the new community in Barking Riverside, with an improved retail offer.
Over the next 15 years, it is expected that nearly 5,000 new homes will be constructed on sites across the town centre, which will result in a more balanced tenure mix. New infrastructure to benefit the local community is being built, including a Child and Family Health Centre as well as a Lifelong Learning Centre, in which will run courses by Barking College and the University of East London. Over 20m in public funding has so far been allocated for site purchases and development.
