I am delighted to convey my very best wishes to everyone in the British Sikh community on the occasion of the Sikh New Year festival of Vaisakhi.
Sikhism is a distinguished and valued part of our rich and diverse society. The Sikh principles of equality, social justice, tolerance and respect for other religions are shared by people from a wide range of backgrounds who rightly appreciate the important and ongoing commitment of Sikhs to the economic, cultural, social and political life of Britain.
Vaisakhi embodies the universal values of truth, compassion, friendship, mutual respect, hope and renewal which lies at the heart of our shared vision of a successful multi-cultural Britain in which the contribution made by each of our many different communities, cultures and faiths is both recognised and valued. I am sure that this year's festival will give both joy and inspiration to all those who attend its celebrations.
Happy Vaisakhi!
