Summary

The report includes an introduction, explaining the scoring mechanism used to compare the different hazards, as well as outlining the report's heritage.

The approach taken in the report has two key elements:

  • to summarise the evidence for the impact of buildings on human health and safety (throughout the report, 'safety' includes fire safety)
  • to assess the relative importance of the various hazards in buildings, by applying the same risk assessment method to all

The report now has 33 hazards ordered by their domestic risk index score. It is therefore structured around these individual hazards in buildings and ordered by their relative importance in terms of risk of harm in or around dwellings.

This report is a revised version of an existing report Building Regulation, Health and Safety BRE report BR417.
