Core Strategies are a key part of the new local planning system introduced by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. They are intended to enhance the strategic role of local authorities, and set the vision for spatial change and policies in the area.
The findings of the Preparing Core Strategies: Spatial Plans in Practice - Supporting the reform of local planning report detailed the strengths and weaknesses of the work prepared by five different local authorities in implementing this part of the new planning system. The report provided practice pointers for local authorities and others to consider when developing core strategies in the future.
The Executive Summary below provides an overview of the main findings and recommendations from the report.
