Summary

This survey found increasing awareness of plan rationalisation among local authorities (LAs), though relatively few had a co-ordinated approach and most had made only moderate progress over the previous year. LAs were increasingly linking plan rationalisation to the community strategy, but most were still producing plans no longer required, typically to aid planning or monitoring. Anticipated benefits were reductions in bureaucracy, improved strategic planning and more integrated services. Barriers were seen as varying periods for existing plans to run their course and the requirements of government departments / other organisations.
