Summary

The consultation paper "Modernising Empty Property Relief", invited views on detailed proposals for changes to the system of empty property rates for unoccupied non-domestic properties. This followed the passage of the Rating (Empty Properties) Act 2007, which gives effect to the Government's reforms to reliefs from business rates in respect of empty properties, as announced in the 2007 Budget.

The deadline for the receipt of responses was 1 October 2007. This document summarises the responses to that consultation and sets out the Government's decisions on taking forward the detailed implementation of those reforms.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, all aspects of the reforms will come into force on 1 April 2008.
