The Budget 2011 announced that 21 Enterprise Zones would be established in England. Eleven local enterprise partnerships were named in the Budget as the ‘first wave’.

The Department published the Enterprise Zone Prospectus the day after the Budget providing information to all local enterprise partnerships about issues they need to consider in their proposals. This was followed by workshops attended by all local enterprise partnerships.

The competition to find the location of the next ten Enterprise Zones will be based on proposals that offer the best prospects to increase growth.

Applications are due by 30 June 2011 and partnerships are expected to nominate specific sites offering the best opportunity for growth. Applicants will have to show their prospective zone has genuine potential to create the new businesses they need, with positive benefits across the wider economic area.
