The district councils Cheshire and Cheshire County Council, along with Mid and South Beds District Councils and Bedfordshire County Council, will be wound up and dissolved on 1 April 2009 and their functions, assets and liabilities transferred to new unitary councils.
The Government has today issued directions to all those affected local authorities, which provide that, until their dissolution, these councils will be unable to enter into certain contracts without prior approval of the body responsible for setting up the new arrangements. Contracts covered by these arrangements may include contracts for the supply of goods and services, and for the sale or purchase of land or property.
These directions, which will come into effect on 16 April 2008 for the district and county councils in Bedfordshire and on 26 May 2008 for the authorities in Cheshire, put in place these arrangements to enable the best use to be made of public money and to maintain effective council services throughout the move to the new unitary councils.
The directions and the general consents were signed today (9 April 2008) and copies were issued to the affected local authorities this afternoon. These versions are being published for information only and the signed and dated versions will be published as soon as they are available.
