Summary

The Government's objective is that Gypsies and Travellers and the settled community should live together peacefully.

Creating and sustaining strong communities is at the heart of the Government's policies. Decent homes are important for the health and well-being of the people living in them. Poor housing helps an area to get a bad reputation. That makes it an unpopular place to live, which in turn may lead to the breakdown of communities.

Everyone should have the opportunity to have a decent home. Government is aiming to make all council and housing association housing decent by 2010. The Government also wants to improve conditions for vulnerable households in privately owned housing, particularly those with children.and improvement in order to reduce the proportion of vulnerable private sector households living in non-decent homes.
