In late 2003, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (now Communities and Local Government) commissioned this review from the Centre for Comparative Housing Research and the Health Policy Research Unit at De Montfort University, Leicester.
The aim was to identify the known impacts of overcrowded housing on people's health and education. To achieve this aim, the review identified, and critically assessed the research evidence.
This report is a review of existing evidence on the impact of overcrowded housing on people's health and education. It presents the findings in relation to physical health (chapter two), mental health (chapter three), childhood growth, development and education (chapter four), and other impacts including personal safety and accidents (chapter five).
