We know the effects of the global economic downturn are having serious consequences in the housing market:

many families are worried about keeping up mortgage repayments as their jobs are affected
lending to first time buyers has halved over the past year
as a result, the rest of the market has slowed down, leading to falls in house prices
and developers are finding it hard to sell new homes

That's why action to provide real help now for the homeowners, first-time buyers and the construction industry is a key part of the Government's plan for the recovery. This factsheet sets out the action being taken.
