The House of Commons' ODPM: Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Committee published its report on Decent Homes on 7 May 2004.
We welcome this report as a contribution to the work being undertaken to achieve the Government's commitment to ensuring that every social sector tenant will be living in a Decent Home by 2010. The Government is also committed to increasing the proportion of vulnerable households living in Decent Homes in the private sector.
Since the publication of the Select Committee's report, the Decent Homes target has been amended slightly as part of the 2004 Spending Review. It now reads:
'By 2010, bring all social housing into a decent condition with most of this improvement taking place in deprived areas, and for vulnerable households in the private sector, including families with children, increase the proportion who live in homes that are in decent condition.'
The inclusion of 'families with children' was in recognition of the Government's commitment to tackling child poverty.
We have always acknowledged that we have a challenging target to meet, but one that we are fully committed to working toward. Good progress has been made to date and we look forward to building on these achievements.
