Summary

The Mixed Communities Initiative (MCI) was announced in January 2005, as a new and more comprehensive approach to tackling area disadvantage, bringing together housing and neighbourhood renewal strategies to reduce concentrations of deprivation, stimulate economic development and improve public services.

This report encompasses in-depth work across 10 different estate and area based transformation programmes. The study explores how existing programmes were potentially delivering more mixed communities, with a view to highlighting transferable lessons and highlighting any policy issues. The fieldwork was carried out in 2006.

The findings and recommendations in this report are those of the consultant authors and do not necessarily represent the views or proposed policies of Communities and Local Government.
