Summary

Fire and Rescue Authorities need well designed buildings in the right place in order to perform their functions and fulfil their responsibilities effectively.  Many older fire stations may no longer serve functional needs adequately but are buildings of distinction.

In line with government's 'Better Public Buildings' policy, authorities should continue this tradition of buildings that meet functional need allied to good design.  The need for community engagement makes this all the more important.

The guidance advises when design should be considered by the project team and the sorts of things that need to be considered.
