Summary

The latest national statistics on planning applications were released under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority on 27 March 2009.

This release presents quarterly statistics on local planning authorities in England. It covers information on Planning applications received and decided including decisions on applications for residential developments (dwellings) and enforcement activities. These are provided at national, regional and local authority level.

The statistics in this Release are based on information for the December quarter 2008 reported to Communities and Local Government as at 27 February 2009 and update those previously released on 12 December 2008.

Key points from the latest release are:

In the December quarter 2008:

  • The number of planning applications received by district level planning authorities decreased by 26 per cent when compared with the December 2007 quarter.
  • District level planning authorities saw a decrease of 22 per cent in the number of applications decided (granted of refused) when compared with the same quarter a year ago.
  • The percentage of major applications determined within the 13 week target remained unchanged when compared with the same quarter last year.
  • Decisions on planning applications for residential developments (dwellings) decreased by 25 per cent in the December quarter 2008.
  • Authorities that undertake county level planning activity determined 361 applications; a decrease of 7 per cent when compared with the same quarter a year ago. The proportion of applications granted increased marginally by 1 percentage point to 93 per cent compared with 92 per cent a year ago.
