Summary

The latest national statistics on Statutory Homelessness for July to September 2009 were released on 10 December 2009, under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

Household acceptances

  • 10,360 applicants were accepted as owed a main homelessness duty during the July to September quarter.
  • This is 28 per cent lower than during the same period in 2008.
  • On a seasonally-adjusted basis, there were 9,980 acceptances, 6 per cent lower than the previous quarter and 71 per cent lower than the last peak in 2003.

Households in temporary accommodation

  • 56,920 households were in temporary accommodation on 30 September 2009, 21 per cent lower than the same date last year, and the largest year on year decrease since the peak in 2004.
  • On a seasonally-adjusted basis, there were 56,320 people in temporary accommodation, 7 per cent lower than the previous quarter and 44 per cent lower than the last peak in 2004.
  • The number of households in temporary accommodation has now fallen for sixteen consecutive quarters.
  • 89 per cent of households were in self-contained accommodation. 4 per cent were in bed and breakfast hotels.
