Summary

The latest national statistics on Statutory Homelessness for April to June 2009 were released on 10 September 2009, under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

Household acceptances

10,650 applicants were accepted as owed a main homelessness duty during the April to June quarter.
This is 32 per cent lower than during the same period in 2008.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, there were 10,520 acceptances, 8 per cent lower than the previous quarter and 69 per cent lower than the last peak in 2003.

Households in temporary accommodation

60,230 households were in temporary accommodation on 30 June 2009, 19 per cent lower than the same date last year, and the largest year on year decrease since the peak in 2004.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, there were 60,250 people in temporary accommodation, 6 per cent lower than the previous quarter and 41 per cent lower than the last peak in 2004.
89 per cent of households were in self-contained accommodation. 4 per cent were in bed and breakfast hotels.

Correction to Supplementary Tables - the household estimate figures for the new Unitary Authorities of Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Central Bedfordshire, and their associated acceptance rates per 1000 households, were corrected on 29 September 2009, having initially been miscalculated. Actual homeless acceptance figures for these authorities were not affected.
