Summary

The House of Commons ODPM (now Communities and Local Government) Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Committee published its report on the Evening Economy and the Urban Renaissance on 1 August 2003.

We welcome this report as a useful contribution to the debate on the role of the evening and late-night economy in the urban renaissance and how best to manage this activity in the interests of all stakeholders. The Government recognises that the more people live in town and city centres, the more their attractiveness and vitality in the evening will improve, adding to security and encouraging more visitors, including tourists.

The Urban White Paper "Our Towns and Cities: The FutureĀ - Delivering an Urban Renaissance" sets out the Government's commitment to make urban living a positive experience for the many, not the few, and to build and maintain sustainable communities.
