On 23 October 2007, the GLA Act received Royal Assent. The Act gives the Mayor new planning powers in relation to London Boroughs' Local Development Schemes and over some planning applications of strategic importance. We expect these powers to come into force on 6 April 2008.
We have today published for consultation a draft of the Mayor of London Order and a draft replacement to Government Office for London Circular 1/2000. These documents implement and explain the provisions in the GLA Act. The draft Mayor of London Order sets out which planning applications must be referred to the Mayor, the process for considering them and the test the Mayor must apply to decide whether his intervention would be justified. The Circular explains how the Mayor's new powers will operate as well as the procedures for preparing the Mayor's Spatial Development Strategy.
The Order and Circular are accompanied by a consultation document which sets out the specific questions we would welcome your views on. You can view the documents and the GLA Act on the Government Office for London website via the link below. The consultation period ends on Thursday 14 February 2008.
