The Business Support Simplification Programme (BSSP), led by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), aims to make it easier for companies and entrepreneurs to understand and access government funded grants, subsidies and advice with which to start and grow their businesses.
Research has shown that businesses receiving support and advice are more likely to flourish, gaining competitive advantage and creating high value companies that benefit local economies. Assistance from the Government can help address market failures or equity gaps, so allowing everyone in society to unlock their talents and realise their full potential, for example in deprived areas or among excluded groups. Local authorities are key partners in the drive to streamline services and join-up them up for businesses.
This document Business Support at the Local Level published jointly by BERR and Communities and Local Government aims to help local authorities understand the implications of BSSP. It also sets out how BSSP fits with the Local Performance Framework and the Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration (SNR). More detail on BSSP can be found on the BERR website (external link).
