Biography

Bill McKenzie, Lord McKenzie of Luton, was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary in Communities and Local Government on 11 June 2009, in addition to his ministerial responsibilities in the Department for Work and Pensions.

Born in 1946, Bill had a long career in accountancy, working for Price Waterhouse in London, Hong Kong and Vietnam. He was an elected member of Luton Borough Council from 1976 to 1992 and from 1999 to 2005, leading the Council between 1999 and 2003 and contested Luton South for Labour in the 1987 and 1992 General Elections.

Lord McKenzie was an advisor to Labour's Shadow Treasury Team in opposition. He became a life peer in July 2004 as Baron McKenzie of Luton. In May 2005 he became a Whip and Government Spokesperson in the House of Lords for Treasury and business issues. In January 2007 he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Department of Work and Pensions, a position he continues to hold.
