Heating and hot water cause the biggest energy costs you face in running your home.

The efficiency of a boiler also has a significant impact on the overall energy efficiency of a building with more than 50 per cent of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions for buildings coming from heating and hot water use.

We have worked with the heating and hot water industry to provide basic advice about the energy efficiency of your heating and hot water systems.

This is in the form of a simple checklist and recommendations which can be used by an engineer when your heating system is serviced. They have been developed with British Gas, CORGI, OFTEC, HETAS, IDHEE, the Energy Saving Trust and the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council.

The checklist provides information about the energy efficiency of their heating and hot water system and gives a rating for the boiler based on the SEDBUK boiler database (external link).

The checklist also shows estimated annual savings for boiler replacement and other home improvements. As these figures are different for gas, oil and solid fuel installations, different versions of the checklists are provided. To help you complete the rating section there is also a boiler rating guide. Copies of these documents are below.
