The Stakeholder Advisory Group on Extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (SAGE) was set up in November 2004 by the Department of Health. It brought together a range of stakeholders to explore the implications of and make practical recommendations to Government for a precautionary approach to power frequency electric and magnetic fields.
SAGE published its first interim assessment Power Lines and Property, Wiring in Homes, and Electrical Equipment in Homes on 27 April 2007. The Government's response to this report was published on 16 October 2009. Both documents are available from the Department of Health (external link).
Of particular interest from a planning perspective is the Government's intention to work with the electricity industry and local authorities to explore how the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines can be formally incorporated into the planning system.
