Suffolk communities to benefit from £27 million investment in fire service buildings

Published 18 June 2008

Communities and Local Government has confirmed a £27.1million PFI credit boost for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service to build or refurbish ten fire stations in the county.

The stations will have improved facilities and provide focal points for safety messages and information within the community to help further reduce fires and fire related deaths, as well providing state of the art working facilities for fire fighters.

The project will deliver the following:

  • the provision of a new fire station in South Lowestoft
  • the refurbishment of the Ipswich fire station in Colchester Road
  • the rebuild of four fire stations at North Lowestoft, Hadleigh, Needham Market and Nayland
  • the refurbishment of four fire stations at Bury St Edmunds, Felixstowe, Haverhill and Sudbury
  • facilities management of the above sites and at the recently constructed fire station at Newmarket.

Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda said:

"I welcome the project which will make Suffolk's fire stations more welcoming to their local communities. This will help to further reduce fires, fire deaths and injuries by providing facilities to help get across fire safety initiatives to the public. The improved facilities for fire service personnel - men and women - will help Suffolk to attract and retain a more diverse workforce which is reflective of the community they serve."

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service operates from thirty-five fire stations located throughout the county. However, some fire stations are no longer best located to meet current and future interventional and fire prevention needs; a number of existing buildings are beyond economic repair and refurbishment work is required for others.

The appointed bidder, Land Group, is expected to start of the construction and refurbishment in July.
