On 26 October 2006 we published Strong and Prosperous Communities a white paper on the future of local government in England.
This followed extensive consultation through the Local:Vision debate.
The white paper sets out measures to change the way local government works and the way central government works with it. Local partners will have more space to respond to local needs and citizens more say in the services they receive and what happens in their area.
Measures needing statutory backing are in the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill [External link], introduced to the House of Commons on 12 December 2006.
Work is in progress on many other aspects too, including building partnerships, empowering communities, assessing performance and supporting councillors.
The White Paper changes are a start but we will go further see, for example, The Governance of Britain (July 2007) [External link].
Our vision is of revitalised local authorities working with partners from every sector. Together they will develop better public services built around the communities, families and individuals who use them. We want people to take an active part in the democratic life of their place and to be part of how it improves.
