Tackling Under Performance
Within this context, where under performance is identified both local and central government are clear that action should be taken at an early stage to address it. Action will be proportionate, reflecting local context and performance as well as where the most efficient and effective sources for support are located. Increasingly this will be at local or sector level.
In cases where there is critical or sustained under-performance the appropriate Secretary of State(s) retain powers to intervene. Action may range from improvement notices to use of statutory powers, depending on the nature, scale and severity of the issues.
