Local government inspection

Communities and Local Government promotes the effective co-ordination of inspection activity across local government. We aim to deliver inspection that is proportionate to risk and directed where it is most needed.

Below you will find links to the Local Service Inspectorate Forum protocols and statements on agreed practice in the LSIF archive.

From April 2009, inspection will be mainly determined by a joint risk assessment undertaken by all local services inspectorates. This will allow a targeted and more proportionate approach.

The risk assessment will draw on all available information to identify the key risks to outcomes and delivery for each area, and to assess how well those risks are being managed.

The risk assessment will be one of four key elements of a new performance framework - the comprehensive area assessment (CAA)

Note: Many of the following publications were issued by our former department, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). ODPM became Communities and Local Government on 5 May 2006 - all references in the text to ODPM now refer to Communities and Local Government.
