Data analysis

The Unit's Analytical Team carries out quantitative analyses of local government performance and financial data in support of policy formulation and evaluation.

The work is organised under three themes:

  • Value for Money
    This theme includes studies designed to measure cost effectiveness and efficiency. Work focuses on comparing local authority performance (using a basket of outcome indicators) with expenditure.
  • Trajectories
    This work includes assessments of local authority performance using comparisons of indicator scores with their baseline values and current targets, and plots of future trajectories. The trajectories also assist in identifying service areas where there is scope for improvement.
  • Benchmarking
    This work focuses on benchmarking individual local authorities against overall average performance to illustrate those service areas where authorities are performing well and those where they are not.
