Local government

Best Value and duty to involve

'Best value' is the statutory basis on which councils plan, review and manage their performance in order to meet the needs and expectations of their citizens who use their services. The aim is to deliver continuous improvement in all their services.

As part of the performance management process, users are asked for their views and experiences of local government and local services.

Our policy is also to promote improved performance and public service reform through commissioning, developing markets and competition, contestability and user choice.

In future there will be a duty for all best value authorities, including local authorities, to inform, consult and involve the people they serve.
