Well Being Power

The Well Being Power was introduced in 2000 to increase local authorities' capability to act on behalf of their areas. It allows principal local authorities in England and Wales to do anything they consider likely to promote the economic, social and environmental well-being of their area unless explicitly prohibited elsewhere in legislation.

Between 2003 and 2007, a formative evaluation was conducted for the Department, which examined local authorities' usage of the Power and the factors which had affected it. A series of reports have been published here and on the websites of the researchers who conducted the study: the Institute of Local Government Studies (University of Birmingham) and the Cities Research Centre (University of the West of England).
