Local government

International

Our aim is for the UK to promote good governance and share good practice in local and regional government worldwide. We actively work with:

  • The European Union (EU) and its other 26 member states
  • The Council of Europe (CoE) and its other 46 member states
  • The Commonwealth Local Government Forum and its other 52 member states

A key partner is the Local Government Association (LGA) which has a European and International Unit. This represents UK local authorities, supports UK delegations overseas, and helps to set up twinning projects and other good practice sharing initiatives.

Recently we have been involved in work to develop common governance principles throughout Europe and to develop strong, democratic and sustainable local government in both the newly emerged democracies of central and eastern Europe, as well as throughout the Commonwealth states. We have hosted international events to take this work forward.
