Our intention is that everyone should benefit from growth, including existing communities. We want to see development of the highest quality - models of well-designed, vibrant urban living, marrying homes with jobs, quality public services and infrastructure.
Across the Growth Areas the Government aims to bring together the best of design and planning to ensure new communities are of the highest quality and have proper public services and infrastructure.
The Sustainable Communities Plan established the Growth Areas Fund to support the three newer Growth Areas and London Opportunity Boroughs in making a quick start on "early wins" housing sites, and to lay the foundations of large scale future growth. Funding was given to help local partners with delivery, provide pump-priming for key projects, and unlock "log jams" blocking development.
The first round of £156m of growth funding was fully committed and used to support over 100 local projects and the second round of £235m allocated in February 2006 to support over 70 local partner capital projects.
With the Thames Gateway Growth Area, Communities and Local Government is working with regional and local regeneration partners to produce a Strategic Framework. This will phase and prioritise development over the whole Gateway so that public, private and voluntary sector funding is coordinated.
