Details of the second round of Communities and Local Government Growth Area Fund projects allocated to Ashford.
In conjunction with a private sector developer, this project will help to deliver a 1,000 space park & ride scheme, 100 new homes, new office and retail premises close to Junction 9 of the M20. It also provides support for preliminary works for a new car park close to the town centre.
Providing good quality Higher and Further education is a priority for the economic future of Ashford. This project contributes to a new landmark Higher and Further education facility close to the town centre and railway stations.
Masterplanning work to deliver sustainable ecological management of important areas of the East Stour River floodplain and adjacent areas of neutral grassland. Communities and Local Government funding supports development of a high quality wetland park very close to the centre of Ashford, which will serve new and existing communities.
Taking forward a number of the study conclusions (river management toolkit, pilot biofuel coppicing and sustainable drainage systems) to help ensure the water supply, waste water treatment and flood defences meet the anticipated growth of Ashford.
The scheme provides an improvement to the headroom of a low railway over road bridge, a new segregated walkway/cycleway and a key road junction improvement. Together these improvements will facilitate public transport access to new housing and other mixed use development planned on brownfield land at the former railway works sites at Newtown.
The 1970's one-way ring road around the centre of Ashford acts as a constraint to both the regeneration and expansion of the town centre (itself key to the future growth of the town). This project will reconfigure most of the ring road to become downgraded to quality, pedestrian-friendly two-way urban streets. It also allows for the first stage of a new cross-Ashford road to the south of the railway line to relieve traffic using the ring road.
Contribution to the delivery of an iconic, fully sustainable Environment Centre, adjacent to Ashford Community Woodland, to be at the forefront of the delivery of Ashford's sustainable development agenda.
