The Housing Corporation

A brief explanation of the roles of the Corporation and links to key publications.

The Housing Corporation was established by Parliament in 1964 to promote voluntary non-profit making housing associations and co-operatives in England. The Corporation is a non-Departmental public body sponsored by Communities and Local Government. It has two principal roles:

  •  it regulates registered social landlords (RSLs - housing associations registered with it); and
  •  it invests in the provision of new affordable housing, mainly by providing social housing grant to RSLs and other bodies ('non-RSLs') through the National Affordable Housing Programme
