Housing

Affordable rural housing

The Government believes that everyone, whether living or working in urban or rural areas, should have access to decent accommodation at a price they can afford.

The Government is aware though that urban and rural communities face different challenges, and because of this in 2005 set up the Affordable Rural Housing Commission to:

  • consider the evidence and reach consensus on the relevant issues around affordable housing needs in rural areas, in the context of sustainable communities
  • provide recommendations for practical solutions across private, government and voluntary sectors, taking account of good practice.

The Government intends using a range of channels and mechanisms to respond in a constructive way to the agenda set by the Commission.  This will include the forthcoming Spending Review, but also a website on which we are posting progress we are making and links to best practice.

Matthew Taylor Review on rural economy and affordable housing

The Prime Minister asked Matthew Taylor, MP for Truro and St Austell, to conduct a review on how land use and planning can better support rural business and deliver affordable housing.

The Matthew Taylor Review on rural economy and affordable housing was presented to Government on 23 July 2008.

The Government will be responding to the Review and its recommendations later in the year.
