How we collect and publish housing data

Most of the data we publish are collected from local authorities by means of regular returns. Some are from regular surveys e.g. Survey of English Housing (SEH) and English House Condition Survey (EHCS). All data are checked for errors. Where no return was submitted or if there were missing data, we have estimated figures. Data published as National Statistics (NS) are produced to high professional standards as set out in the National Statistics Code of Practice (External link).

Nearly all of the housing statistics published on paper or on the web by our Improving Data and Statistics and Dissemination Division are released accompanied by a Statistical Release (SR) - a statistical press notice. This provides a brief summary of the publication or findings of the report including key points. You can find all available Releases and associated reports in the Publications section for each topic area.

We aim to ensure that all of the data we produce is contained in our sets of Live Tables which are updated  when data becomes available. A full list of the latest set of tables by housing topic can be found in the Live Tables section. You should also see the data available in the Survey of English Housing and English House Condition Survey sections.

If you are looking for a particular aspect of housing data, you could try using the alphabetical Index of Data (MS Word 2,063kb) which is based on the first letter of the item (or variable name) that you are interested in.

All tables/charts are available in Microsoft Excel Version 7 format (with the file size shown) to download. If you have a problem downloading files please e-mail housing.statistics@communities.gsi.gov.uk and we will supply a Comma Separated Value (CSV) version to you.

If you would like to be informed when our data and publications are updated you can register via our Housing Statistics Alert  page.
