Housing

What statistics do we produce?

We produce a wide range of housing related statistics. These include:

  • basic or physical related statistics
examples are: stock of dwellings, housing flows such as housebuilding, conversions and demolitions, house condition (e.g. English House Condition Survey), and sales and transfers of social housing
  • socially related statistics
examples are: homelessness, rents, mortgages, households estimates and projections, household characteristics (e.g. Survey of English Housing), and housing renewals activities and grants e.g. renovation and disabled facilities, and
  • economic/finance related
housing market data such as house and land prices, mortgages and number of transactions; local government receipts or grants and expenditures on housing.

Most of these data are available on the Housing statistics by topic webpage. They are shown, mostly, by the three tenure categories i.e. private, registered social landlord (RSL or housing association), and local authority.

A list explaining most of the housing terms used can be found in the Definition of general housing terms.

Construction Statistics are the responsibility of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and are available on its website at: http://www.berr.gov.uk/sectors/construction/ConstructionStatistics/page16429.html (External link)

If you are in any doubt about the data or contents of these pages please email: housing.statistics@communities.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 020 7944 3303.
