Publications on homelessness data

Introduction

National statistics on homelessness are released under the arrangements of the UK Statistics Authority on a quarterly basis. The latest statistics were released on 11th September 2008 and provides statistics up to the end of June 2008 for households in England defined as homeless in the 1996 Housing Act.
It also contains figures for:

  1. number of households eligible for assistance as a result of unintentionally homeless, by ethnicity, and falling within a priority need group;
  2. reason for loss of last settled home;
  3. households in temporary accommodation;
  4. type of temporary accommodation and
  5. a supplementary table showing summary information as reported by local authorities.

The combined Statistical Release (SR) and accompanied data/charts can be obtained by selecting the appropriate quarter listed under the Statutory Homelessness Statistical Releases. Other data relating to homelessness, including regional and local authority level data, can be found in the live set of tables.

Statutory homelessness statistics

1. Key information about local authorities' discharge of their duties under homelessness legislation is collected on quarterly P1E returns. All returns undergo thorough validation to ensure that data are as complete and accurate as possible, with a minimum target that 90 per cent of local authorities respond. Estimates are made for missing returns, along with imputations for any incomplete data, and summary results are published in a quarterly Statistical Release by Communities and Local Government/National Statistics, in accordance with National Statistics Code of Practice.
