Research into local authority housing management

The following research has been published on local authority housing management.

  • On the spot housing management: an evaluation of policy and practice
    Housing Research Summary No.149. An evaluation of housing management initiatives in the 44 most deprived council districts in England. Key findings listed shoe that on-the-spot provision was widespread and was more common in council stock than in housing association stock.
  • Costs of local authority management
    Housing Research Summary No.103. This 1999 research found that certain services are viewed as core housing management services. The factors influencing the cost of these services include stock profile and design, councils' own policies may be both external and organisational.
  • Concierge, controlled entry and similar schemes for high rise blocks
    Housing Research Summary No.66. In 1992 the Safe Neighbourhoods Unit evaluated a range of schemes set up to help improve security and management of high rise blocks. They measured their impact on crime, lettings, management and repair performance and satisfaction.
  • Models of practice in housing advice services
    Housing Research Summary No.61. Assessment of the pattern of provision of housing advice services, including the purposes of housing advice - citizenship, policy, service rights and market efficiency. Main providers included local authorities and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Evaluation of Housing Management performance in tenant organisations
    Housing Research Summary No.40 (Print only). This 1995 summary compares tenant management organisations with other social housing managers - e.g. councils and housing associations - to determine whether they provide more effective housing management and examines the lessons learned.

  • Managing social housing
    Housing Research Summary No.15 (Print only). This 1993 summary looks at the housing management performance of housing associations and local authorities under the financial regimes introduced in April 1989 and April 1990. Includes emerging issues and recommendations for social landlords.
  • Estate Based Housing Management: An Evaluation
    Housing Research Summary No.10 (Print only). This 1993 summary examines two experimental estates using an estate based housing management approach and compared them with two other "control" estates to look at the impact on the quality of housing service provision.
