An ageing society is one of the great challenges for housing.
In Lifetime Homes, Lifetime Neighbourhoods, our housing strategy for an ageing society we have announced our ambitions to build homes to Lifetime Homes standards and a vision of Lifetime Neighbourhoods that are fit for all.
We are providing improved advice and information and expanding our help for simple repairs and adaptations, with more investment in major home adaptations to support independence.
The following associated documents were published alongside the strategy on 25 February 2008:
You can watch a short video of the Prime Minister Gordon Brown speaking about the Strategy, an interview with Hazel Blears and clips from the launch at No 10 Downing Street on YouTube (external link), or you can read her webchat at the 10 Downing Street website (external link).
You can also view the speech made by Baroness Andrews, about the Strategy, at Age Concern's Age Agenda Conference 2008, on 26 February 2008.
To see details of the sixteen standards referred to in the strategy please download the Lifetime Homes Diagram (JPEG 2.11Mb).
The Social Exclusion Unit report A Sure Start to Later Life - Ending inequalities for Older People - January 2006 (external link) committed Communities and Local Government, working with the Department of Health, DEFRA and external partners, to develop a strategy for housing and older people. Work on the strategy is underway.
A short accessible overview of work was published as the National Strategy for Housing in an Ageing Society - a pre-strategy document seeking your views on 8 May 2007.
This section also includes background and membership information for the Housing and Older People Development Group (HOPDEV), an independent body, supported and sponsored by Communities and Local Government and the Department of Health. It has advised Government on older people's housing issues since 2001.
