Bi-annual count of Gypsy and Traveller Caravans

The bi-annual Count of Gypsy and Traveller caravans is a voluntary survey undertaken by local authorities. It takes place in January and July of each year, and records the number of caravans on socially rented sites, privately owned sites, on unauthorised developments of land (where Gypsies and Travellers own the land but do not have planning permission), and on unauthorised roadside encampments across England.

Data is made available online which covers the results of the last five counts, including details of the location and capacity of the network of Gypsy and Traveller sites operated by local authorities. Historic information on Gypsy and Traveller caravan numbers is available from 1979 to date and can be obtained by emailing the Communities and Local Government's Gypsy and Traveller Unit at:  gypsies@communities.gsi.gov.uk.

Information on Gypsies and Travellers is also found in the annual Survey of English Housing, which is carried out on behalf of the Department by the National Centre for Social Research (NCSR), and includes questions regarding Gypsy and Traveller ethnicity.
