What is anti-social behaviour?

Anti-social behaviour includes a wide range of problems - and includes behaviour that is capable of causing nuisance or annoyance to an individual/s or the wider community. Other terms such as 'nuisance', 'neighbour disputes' and 'disorder' are also used to describe some of this behaviour. This type of behaviour can include:

  • Harassment and intimidating behaviour
  • Hate crime, for example racist or homophobic abuse
  • Behaviour that creates alarm and fear
  • Noisy neighbours and loud parties
  • Problems associated with people dealing or using drugs
  • People being drunk or rowdy
  • Vandalism, graffiti and other deliberate damage to property
  • Rubbish or litter lying around, abandoned cars etc

These types of behaviour need not involve serious criminal activity but sometimes do, for example drug dealing or racially motivated abuse. The key to categorising behaviour as anti-social must be consideration of its impact on others.
