Home buying schemes

Whether you are a council or housing association tenant, keyworker or first time buyer there may be a home ownership scheme suitable for you.

This page provides links to information produced by Communities and Local Government and the Housing Corporation for tenants looking to own their home under the Right to Buy, Right to Acquire or HomeBuy schemes.

Right to Buy

First introduced in 1980, the Right to Buy scheme is aimed at secure tenants of local authorities (councils) and those assured tenants of registered social landlords/housing associations who previously held secure tenancies with local authorities. It is open to virtually any secure tenant who can afford to buy.

Communities and Local Government currently produces two leaflets for potential applicants which are available below.

Detailed information about the Right to Buy, eligibility, and how to apply is available on the Directgov (external link) website.

Right to Acquire

The Right to Acquire is a scheme giving eligible tenants of registered social landlords the legal right to buy the home they currently rent.

Detailed information about the Right to Acquire, eligibility, and how to apply is available on the Directgov (external link) website.

The Homebuy Scheme

HomeBuy enables social tenants, key workers and other first time buyers to buy a share of a home and get a first step on the housing ladder.

There are three HomeBuy products based on equity sharing to offer people a choice in the type of home they can buy.
